How to change your voicemail greeting on Android

These steps are for phones that use Google's Phone by Google app, including Pixel phones and many Motorola and other Android phones. Samsung phones use their own app: see how to change your voicemail greeting on Samsung.

Using visual voicemail in the Phone app

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap the three-dot menu (or your profile icon, depending on the version) and choose Settings.
3. Tap Voicemail.
4. Tap Greeting. If you don't see it, your carrier doesn't support visual voicemail in the Google Phone app. Use the voice-menu method below.
5. Tap Record greeting, speak your message, and stop the recording.
6. Play it back, then tap Save and set it as your active greeting if asked.

Using the voicemail voice menu (works on any Android phone)

1. Open the Phone app and press and hold 1 on the dial pad, or dial your own number.
2. Enter your voicemail PIN if prompted.
3. Choose the personal options or greetings option from the main menu and follow the prompts to record a new greeting.

Some carriers install their own voicemail app (for example, Verizon's or T-Mobile's visual voicemail apps). If your phone uses one, the greeting setting is usually under that app's Settings or Greetings menu.

Can I upload an audio file?

The Google Phone app doesn't offer a file upload for greetings. To use an MP3 from our generator, play it from another device next to your phone's microphone while you record.

Check that callers hear the new greeting

Call your own number from another phone and let it go to voicemail. If you still hear the old greeting, open the greeting settings again and make sure the new one is selected as active, not just saved. Visual voicemail can take a few minutes to sync with your carrier.
