How to Set Up Voicemail
To set up voicemail for the first time, call your voicemail box from your own phone (on most phones, press and hold 1), follow the setup prompts to create a password or PIN, record your name, and record a greeting. Visual voicemail apps walk you through the same steps on screen.
- Check that voicemail is on your plan. Almost every US mobile plan includes basic voicemail. If calling it gives an error, contact your carrier before you go further.
- Call your voicemail box. Press and hold 1 on the dial pad, or dial your carrier's voicemail number (for example, *86 on Verizon or 123 on T-Mobile). On iPhone, you can usually start from Phone → Voicemail → Set Up Now instead.
- Enter the temporary password if asked. Some carriers use a default, often the last four digits of your phone number. Listen for the prompt.
- Create a new password or PIN. Pick something you'll remember but that isn't your birthday or 1234. You'll need it to check messages from another phone.
- Record your name. This is used in the default greeting and in some system messages.
- Record or choose a greeting. Use the default greeting that reads your number, or record a custom one: who you are, that you can't answer, and what the caller should leave.
- Test it. Call your number from another phone, let it ring through, and leave yourself a short message.
Menus, password lengths, and key numbers vary by phone model, software version, and carrier, so listen to each prompt rather than pressing keys from memory. Find your phone or carrier below.
Already set up and just want a new message? See how to change your voicemail greeting. Need a polished greeting for an office line? You can generate one with our tool and upload it to most business phone systems, as described in office phone systems.

01
How to set up voicemail on iPhone
On iPhone, first-time setup happens in the Phone app if your carrier supports Visual Voicemail, which most major US carriers do.
Steps
- Open the Phone app.
- Go to Voicemail. In older versions of iOS it's a tab in the bottom-right corner. In newer versions with the redesigned Phone app, voicemail may be grouped with your calls instead; look for a Voicemail filter or menu, or switch to the Classic layout.
- Tap Set Up Now. If you don't see this button, voicemail may already be set up (skip to recording a greeting) or Visual Voicemail isn't available on your line (see below).
- Enter a voicemail password, then enter it again to confirm. Your carrier sets the allowed length.
- Choose a greeting: Default plays your phone number in a system voice, and Custom lets you record your own.
- If you picked Custom, tap Record, say your greeting, tap Stop, play it back, and tap Save.
Your voicemails now appear in the Voicemail section, and you can tap any message to play or read its transcription where available.
If you see "Call Voicemail" instead of "Set Up Now"
Visual Voicemail isn't active on your line. Tap Call Voicemail (or press and hold 1 on the keypad) and follow your carrier's voice prompts to create a password and record a greeting. After that, restart the phone. On some plans the Set Up Now button then appears; on others, you'll keep using the voice menu.
Forgot the password you just set?
Depending on your iOS version, you may find Change Voicemail Password under Settings → Apps → Phone (or Settings → Phone on older versions). If the option isn't there, reset it through your carrier's app or website.

How to set up Verizon voicemail
By phone (basic voicemail)
- From your Verizon phone, dial *86 and press Send/Call. Pressing and holding 1 usually works too.
- The first time you call, the system starts a short setup tutorial. If it asks for a temporary password, try the last four digits of your phone number, or listen for instructions.
- Create a new voicemail password when prompted. The system tells you the allowed length and may reject easy patterns such as 1234.
- Record your name.
- Choose a greeting. You can keep the standard system greeting or record a personal one after the tone, then press #.
- Follow the prompts to finish setup.
To check messages from another phone later, call your own 10-digit Verizon number, press # when the greeting starts, and enter your password.
With visual voicemail
On iPhone, use Set Up Now in the Phone app (see the iPhone section). On Android, Verizon's visual voicemail may be built into the Phone app or provided by a separate Verizon app, depending on your phone. Open it and follow the setup screens. Some visual voicemail features may depend on your plan.
If setup fails or you've forgotten your password, you can usually reset it in the My Verizon app or website.
05
How to set up AT&T voicemail
By phone
- On your AT&T phone, press and hold 1, or dial your own 10-digit number.
- If asked, choose your language.
- Create a voicemail password. Use the length the prompt asks for, and avoid simple patterns.
- Record your name when prompted.
- Choose a greeting: the standard greeting that plays your number, or a personal greeting you record after the tone.
- Follow the prompts to save and finish setup.
Listen to each prompt rather than pressing keys from memory, since AT&T's menu can change by mailbox type.
With visual voicemail
On iPhone, tap Set Up Now in the Phone app's Voicemail section (see the iPhone section). On Android, visual voicemail may be built into the Phone app or provided by AT&T's visual voicemail app, depending on your phone. In some cases you need to set a password by phone first and then sign in to the app.
Forgot your password during setup?
You can usually reset it from your myAT&T account or app, or by calling AT&T customer support.

How to set up T-Mobile voicemail
By phone
- On your T-Mobile phone, press and hold 1, or dial 123.
- If asked for a temporary password, try the last four digits of your phone number, or follow the prompts.
- Create a new voicemail password. The prompt tells you the allowed length.
- Record your name.
- Record a greeting after the tone and press #, or choose the standard greeting.
- Follow the prompts to save. Your mailbox is now active.
From another phone, you can reach your mailbox by calling your own T-Mobile number, pressing * during the greeting, and entering your password.
With visual voicemail
On iPhone, use Set Up Now in the Phone app's Voicemail section. On Android, visual voicemail may be in the Phone app's voicemail settings or in T-Mobile's visual voicemail app, depending on your phone. Open it and follow the setup screens.
If you're locked out or forgot your password, you can usually reset it through the T-Mobile app, your online account, or customer care.

How to set up voicemail in Google Voice
Once you've picked a Google Voice number, voicemail is turned on automatically. Setup is mostly about recording a greeting and choosing how you want to be notified.
On a computer
- Go to voice.google.com and sign in.
- Click Settings (the gear icon).
- Under Voicemail, click Voicemail greeting, then Record a greeting. Allow microphone access, record, and save.
- In the same section, decide whether to get voicemail via email and whether to turn on voicemail transcripts. Option names may vary.
- If you plan to check voicemail by calling in from a linked phone, look for a voicemail PIN setting under Security or Voicemail and set one.
On the Google Voice app
- Open the Google Voice app, tap the menu (or your profile picture), then Settings.
- Under Voicemail, tap Voicemail greeting and record a new one.
- Adjust notification and transcript settings in the same section.
Calls not reaching Google Voice voicemail?
Check your call forwarding settings. If calls ring a linked phone, that phone's carrier voicemail may answer first. Answer screening or a longer ring time in Google Voice can help, and the exact options vary by account type.

How to set up voicemail on office phone systems (RingCentral, Zoom Phone, Teams, Grasshopper)
Business phone systems handle voicemail per user or extension, and most let you upload an audio file as your greeting. That makes them a good fit for a greeting made with our generator. Settings usually live in a web portal or desktop app, and menu names change often, so check your provider's help center if something doesn't match.
Voicemail usually works as soon as an admin assigns you a number or extension. What's left is your greeting, and on these systems you can upload one instead of recording it:
- RingCentral: upload a voicemail greeting to RingCentral
- Grasshopper: upload a voicemail greeting to Grasshopper
- 3CX: upload a voicemail greeting to 3CX
- Zoom Phone: upload a voicemail greeting to Zoom Phone
- Microsoft Teams: personal greetings are recorded in Settings → Calls → Manage voicemail; admins can upload greetings for auto attendants
Which format should I upload?
Download MP3 for most hosted business phone services, and always for Grasshopper. Download 8kHz mono WAV for 3CX, or if your provider's instructions mention 8kHz, 8000 Hz, telephone quality, or PCM, which is common with desk-phone and PBX systems.
Set up and not sure what to say?
Browse ready-made scripts or type your own and turn it into a natural-sounding audio file in seconds.

Troubleshooting
Pressing and holding 1 says "voicemail number not set"
Your phone doesn't know your carrier's voicemail access number. Open the Phone app's voicemail settings and enter the number your carrier lists on its support site. Restarting the phone or reinserting the SIM can also make it load automatically.
My iPhone shows "Call Voicemail" instead of "Set Up Now"
Visual Voicemail isn't active on your line. Set up your mailbox through the voice menu first, then restart the phone. If the button still doesn't appear, ask your carrier whether Visual Voicemail is included in your plan.
The setup asks for a password I never created
Many carriers use a temporary password for new mailboxes, often the last four digits of your phone number. If that doesn't work, reset the voicemail password from your carrier's app or website, or call customer support.
Calls ring and ring but never go to voicemail
Check whether call forwarding, a call-blocking app, or Do Not Disturb settings are sending calls elsewhere. On Google Voice or a business system, also check the ring time and forwarding rules. Your carrier can confirm that conditional forwarding to voicemail is turned on.
My mailbox says it's full right after setup
Old messages from a previous owner of the number, or saved messages in an inactive visual voicemail app, can fill the box. Delete them through the voice menu, and ask your carrier to reset the mailbox if it still reports full.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I set up voicemail for the first time?
Press and hold 1 on your phone's dial pad (or use Phone → Voicemail → Set Up Now on iPhone), create a password, record your name, and choose or record a greeting. Then call yourself from another phone to test it.
Is voicemail free?
Basic voicemail is included with most US mobile plans. Visual voicemail and transcription are often included too, but some carriers reserve certain features for specific plans. Check your plan details.
What should my voicemail password be?
Use the length your carrier asks for and avoid obvious choices like 1234, 0000, or the last digits of your phone number. Anyone with your password can listen to your messages from another phone.
Do I have to record a greeting during setup?
No. You can keep the default greeting, which usually reads your phone number. You can record a custom greeting at any time later. See our guide on how to change your voicemail greeting.
Can I use a professionally voiced greeting?
Yes. Generate a greeting with our tool and download it. Business phone systems usually let you upload the file directly. On cell phones, play it from another device near your phone while you record the greeting.
How do I set up voicemail on a new phone with the same number?
Your mailbox, password, and greeting usually stay with your number at the carrier, so they carry over. You may only need to turn on visual voicemail again on the new phone.
