How to upload a custom voicemail greeting to Grasshopper

Steps last checked on against Grasshopper's help center.

Grasshopper lets you upload a voicemail greeting from the web portal. Voicemail greetings belong to an extension: the main and away greetings can't take a message, so if you want callers to leave voicemail, send calls to an extension.

Upload a voicemail greeting

  1. Sign in to the Grasshopper web portal.
  2. Go to Call management → Greetings library.
  3. Open the Voicemail tab and click Add greeting.
  4. Choose Upload greeting, select your file, and pick the extension it's for.
  5. Save, and make sure the new greeting is the active one for that extension.

In the older portal

If your account still uses the legacy layout: go to Settings → Greetings, click Show other greetings next to the extension, then under Voicemail Greeting click Change greeting → Create new greeting → Upload greeting. Click Use to make it active.

File requirements

  • Format: MP3, MP4, or M4A. WAV isn't listed, so download the MP3 from our generator.
  • Size and length: up to 5 MB, which Grasshopper puts at about 2 minutes of audio. A 30-second greeting is far smaller.
  • Audio: 16-bit mono.
  • File name: 24 characters or fewer. Rename the download to something short, like main-greeting.mp3, before you upload.

Common problems

  • The upload is rejected: you probably chose the WAV. Upload the MP3 instead. Also check the file name is 24 characters or fewer.
  • Callers can't leave a message: the main greeting doesn't take voicemail. Route the call to an extension that has a voicemail greeting.
  • The old greeting still plays: in the legacy portal, click Use on the new greeting. In the current portal, check which greeting is assigned to the extension.

Need the file first? Make a greeting and download the MP3.

Grasshopper's portal is updated often, so menu labels may differ slightly. The upload option is always under greetings for the extension.
